چکیده

Cast iron (CI) is one of the oldest materials in commercial use. It has excellent compressive strength and is commonly used for structures that require this property, as well as for water and sewer lines. This article explains CI metallurgy and why the understanding of this metallurgy is key to understanding other ferrous materials and alloys. The composition of cast iron (CI) varies significantly depending upon the grade of pig iron used in its manufacture. CI contains carbon in the range of ~2 to 4 wt%. The mode and concentration of carbon in the CI is controlled to produce various grades of CI, which differ significantly in their mechanical properties and weldability. The carbon equivalent (CE) of a CI helps to distinguish the gray irons, which cool into a microstructure containing graphite, and the white irons, where the carbon is present mainly as cementite. The CE is defined in Equation (1).

Gray cast-iron water pipe metallurgy

The results of a metallographic study of grey cast iron water pipes are reported. These pipes had been installed between 1885 and 1973 in eight different water systems. Each pipe had been extracted during scheduled maintenance or failure repairs to provide data for a larger study to produce a methodology for determining the residual life of grey cast iron pipes. This metallographic study was co...

Study of Graphite Content and Sintering Temperature on Microstructure Properties of Iron-Based Powder Preform

In this present work effect of temperature and graphite contents on the microstructural and mechanical properties of iron based powder metallurgy freeform was studied. The different graphite contents (0%, 2%, 5% and 10%) were mixed in iron powder and compact them in 100 KN. These specimens were sintered at 7000 C, 8500 C and 10000 C in muffle furnaces. Microstructural properties were evaluated ...

Investigation of Hardness and Impact Toughness of Zr-Microalloyed Cast Steel

Microalloyed cast steels are a group of microalloyed steels in which reliable mechanical properties could be achieved by heat treatment. In this work, the heat treatment processes were carried out on the cast specimens as the step samples by different thicknesses and Zr content. The results show that after homogenization, variations in thickness have no effect on the hardness. Also, after hea...
